Luba HeadRest

Description

The Luba people occupy a land of rivers and savanna in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The widespread trade networks in the region produced great wealth and prestige for certain individuals. These people commissioned fine works of art.

The Luba Headrest is used by the elite.
The sculpture elevates the head of the owner as he or she is resting or sleeping, protecting the elaborate hairstyle for up to 3 months. Some of the elaborate hairstyles can require up to fifty hours to create.
